Plastic Composting Bins | Composters that Really Work
As the name suggests, plastic composting bins are used for the purpose of composting. First let us understand what is composting. It is the decomposition of organic remains – plant and other materials, which makes a dark substance. This is excellent to enrich garden soil and for house plants. Through the process of composting, one can turn organic wastes into a valuable resource.
Plastic composting bins are now readily available in shops. They are usually made from recycled plastic. The main purpose of using these bins is to speed up the process of decomposition, and to avoid unnecessary piles of compost lining the garden, as they take up a lot of space. Although plastic composting bins can be built at home, they are now available commercially. However, there are several advantages and disadvantages of using a plastic composting bin. Firstly, they are more expensive than the ones you build at home. These bins typically cost around $100, thus they should provide the user with enough value, or else this expense will be unnecessary and worthless.
Plastic composting bins are relatively easy to move around, since they are very light weight. One very simple method of composting is to place the compost pile in that section of the garden that needs it. Then place the plastic composting bin on top of this pile. Once the composting is complete, you can easily lift off the bin, and spread the compost in the immediate area. They are made of recycled plastic and their dark color, black or dark green, enables them to absorb heat so as to maximize the temperature for the decomposition process.
Plastic composting bins keep the compost enclosed and covered. This reduces the danger of animals digging through the compost pile. Also the amount of water can be controlled in these plastic composting bins. Water is essential for the decomposition process. If the compost pile is left open, the water may evaporate very easily, depending on the weather conditions. If it is kept enclosed in these bins, the water will not dry up as quickly, and this will quicken the composting process.
Plastic composting bins however, do come with their share of disadvantages as well. The bins that are available in the market have a fixed size. They may be small for your own individual requirements, thus the problem of limited capacity. If you build your own compost bin, it would be customized according to your needs and what size you want unlike the store bought bins.
Some of the designs of the bins are such that they do not have side vents for proper ventilation. This is when these bins prove to be a real problem. Without proper ventilation, the compost mixture can become too wet if you keep on adding wet raw materials to it. A certain amount of moisture is necessary for composting, but too much water will lead to not only a sloppy mixture but also one which attracts a lot of insects and has a stinking odor. If in case your plastic composting bin does not have vents, then its best to drill some holes in the lid, so as to avoid these problems.
Even though they are costly, but if these bins have proper vents and their size suit your requirements, then these bins are a good choice and a good investment for those users who use composts in their gardens.
